Southampton Coach Hopes Ugochukwu Stays, Says "Chelsea Are Not Stupid"

Southampton head coach Ivan Juric has expressed his desire for Lesley Ugochukwu to remain with the club as the French-Nigerian midfielder continues to make strides during his loan spell from Chelsea. Ugochukwu, who joined Southampton at the start of the season, has recently regained his spot in the team after falling out of favour under former manager Russell Martin.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Southampton’s match against Brentford, Juric praised Ugochukwu’s potential, describing him as a talented young player with a bright future. "I want him to stay here. I think he has great potential. The people from Chelsea are not stupid. He’s a young guy at 20 years old, and it’s not always easy to work with youngsters, but he’s good with potential," Juric said.

Ugochukwu moved to Chelsea from Rennes in 2023 but struggled for playing time, appearing in only 15 matches across all competitions in his debut season. Since joining Southampton, he has started six games out of a possible 23. With a contract at Chelsea lasting until 2030, the midfielder’s future remains a subject of interest for both clubs.

Lesley Ugochukwu’s journey highlights the challenges faced by young talents trying to establish themselves at top clubs. His move to Southampton has provided him with much needed game time and a platform to showcase his abilities. For Chelsea, this loan spells an opportunity to monitor his development while ensuring he gains valuable Premier League experience.

Ivan Juric’s endorsement of Ugochukwu underscores the importance of nurturing young players in a supportive environment. At 20, Ugochukwu is still in the formative stages of his career, and consistent playing time is critical for his growth.
